Senior year is a big deal! It’s the final chapter of one amazing story and the start of something brand new. As a photographer, I love helping seniors (and their proud parents!) celebrate this milestone with a session that’s as unique, relaxed, and confident as the graduate themselves. If you’re new to senior portraits or just want to make the most of the experience this guide will walk you through exactly what to expect and how to prepare for your session with Jennifer Heinz Photography.

First Things First: What’s a Senior Session, Really?

Your senior session is more than just a few quick photos it’s a personalized experience that captures who you are right now, at this once-in-a-lifetime moment. Whether you're sporty, artsy, outdoorsy, trendy, or totally chill, this session is all about you.

Expect lots of laughs, a few goofy moments, and plenty of shots that will make your parents say, “How did they grow up so fast?!”

Step 1: Booking Your Session

When you're ready to book, we’ll chat about:

  • Your style and personality

  • Location preferences (urban, nature, studio, etc.)

  • Outfit ideas

  • Timing (many seniors book summer/fall before yearbook deadlines!)

Once you’re booked, I’ll send you a Senior Session Prep Guide that covers everything from what to wear to how to feel camera-ready.

Pro tip: Book early to secure your ideal date, especially in fall—prime season fills up fast!

Step 2: What to Wear (And What Not To)

You’ll want 2–3 outfits that show off your personality. Here’s how to choose them:

YES to:

  • Outfits that make you feel confident

  • A mix of casual, dressy, and something "in-between"

  • Clothes that fit well and move comfortably

  • Layers and textures (like denim jackets, flannel, cardigans)

  • Classic styles that won’t feel “so 2025” ten years from now

Avoid:

  • Neon colors or big logos

  • Distracting patterns or wrinkly fabrics

  • Shoes you can’t walk in (unless they’re just for the shot!)

If you’re not sure what works, I’m happy to help you build outfits or send inspiration boards based on your vibe.

Step 3: Choosing the Perfect Location

Locations matter! They set the tone and style of your session.

Some options include:

  • Natural areas: fields, woods, rivers, golden hour light

  • Urban/downtown: walls, textures, staircases, alleys

  • School or sports locations: great for athletes and spirit shots

  • Studio or minimal setups: clean and timeless

We can also mix and match! I’ll help you choose based on what fits your personality and session goals.

Step 4: Hair, Makeup & Feeling Your Best

You don’t need to be glammed up (unless you want to!), but a little polish can make a big difference. Many seniors choose to:

  • Schedule professional makeup for a soft, natural look

  • Trim or style hair a few days before (not the day of!)

  • Bring chapstick, hairbrush, blotting sheets, etc.

Most importantly: hydrate, sleep well, and eat before your session so you feel great on camera.

Step 5: What Happens on Session Day

On the big day, we’ll meet at the agreed location and walk through everything together. I’ll guide you through poses, help you relax, and make sure we’re getting shots that feel true to who you are.

Expect to:

  • Laugh (a lot!)

  • Change outfits once or twice

  • Walk a little between photo spots

  • Get a mix of posed and candid-style images

Worried about posing? Don’t be! I’ll show you what to do with your hands and help you feel like your natural self.

Step 6: After the Session

After your session, I’ll hand-edit your best images and send you a gallery where you can:

  • Download your photos

  • Share with friends and family

  • Order prints, wall art, or a keepsake senior album

Turnaround time is usually 1-2 weeks, depending on the season. I promise it’ll be worth the wait!

Final Tips for a Great Senior Session

  • Bring a water bottle and comfortable shoes (especially if we’re outdoors!)

  • Don’t stress, this is meant to be fun

  • Bring your parent, sibling, or bestie for support (and outfit help)

  • Trust the process, you’ll love how it all comes together
