There’s something absolutely magical about photographing a newborn: their tiny fingers, squishy cheeks, and the way they curl up in that sleepy newborn pose. But what makes these moments even more timeless? The right props.

As a newborn photographer, I’ve spent years curating props that are not only beautiful, but safe, soft, and functional. Whether you’re preparing for your session or just curious about what happens behind the scenes, here are my Top 5 Must-Have Newborn Photography Props and how I use them to create dreamy, heart-melting images.

1. Baskets & Bowls

Why I love them: Baskets, bowls, and crates create the perfect little “nest” for your newborn. They add warmth and texture while gently supporting baby in a cozy, curled-up pose.

How I use them: I carefully line each basket with soft blankets or fluff to make it snug and safe. Babies are placed in the fetal position and swaddled for comfort. I often shoot from above to highlight the roundness and softness of the pose.

Bonus: Neutral-toned baskets fit seamlessly into any color palette and draw the eye right to baby.

2. Wraps & Swaddles

Why I love them: Wraps are the foundation of nearly every newborn session. They keep baby feeling secure (just like in the womb!) and help soothe fussiness during posing.

How I use them: I use different wrapping techniques depending on the pose. Some wraps allow the baby’s hands or feet to peek out, while others are snug from head to toe. I always use soft, breathable fabrics in a variety of colors and textures.

Pro tip: Wraps also allow for quick transitions between setups with minimal disruption to baby.

3. Stuffed Animals & Mini Props

Why I love them: Tiny teddy bears, knitted hearts, or miniature lovies can make a sweet image even more meaningful. Plus, they’re the perfect size for baby hands to hold!

How I use them: I add these to a swaddled setup, nestling a little stuffie into baby’s hand. It adds a whimsical, sentimental touch and becomes a favorite for parents to frame or print.

Client idea: Bring your own special item like a family heirloom or your baby’s future nursery plushie for an extra personal moment.

4. Mini Beds & Crates

Why I love them: These pint-sized props are designed just for newborn photography and allow for sweet “sleeping baby” poses that feel cozy and classic.

How I use them: I layer soft blankets and textures, gently pose baby on their side or back, and use pillows for subtle support. These setups work beautifully for both boys and girls, and I often match the styling to your preferred color theme.

Photographer's tip: I always ensure these props are stable and never leave baby unattended. Safety is always my first priority.

5. Hats, Headbands & Bonnets

Why I love them: These small accessories bring variety and style to your session without overwhelming baby’s natural cuteness. From delicate floral headbands to vintage knit bonnets, the options are endless.

How I use them: I choose accessories that complement your color palette and overall styling, keeping things minimal and soft. I rotate between a few headwear options so you have a variety of final images to choose from.

Gentle rule: I keep accessories subtle never bulky or distracting so baby’s face remains the star of the show.

Bonus: Less Is More

While I love props, I also believe in simplicity and balance. Too many props can distract from what matters most your baby. Each session with Jennifer Heinz Photography is thoughtfully styled to highlight your little one, using props as gentle enhancements, not centerpieces.
